Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Language Arts Teacher
FLSA: Exempt
QUALIFICATIONS: Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia
Teaching License with an endorsement in Middle School
Language Arts or English 6-12.
REPORTS TO: Principal and/or other Supervisor
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 2020-2021 School Year
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Participate in curriculum review and design.
Implement a variety of effective instructional strategies consistent with lesson objectives.
Diagnose and evaluates student abilities and progress in a timely and consistent manner.
Monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
Refer students for alternative services as provided by the District (ESL, Reading, Special Reading).
Effectively implement district initiatives.
Effectively collaborate with department and grade level teachers.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of Culturally Responsive Teaching strategies and bilingual in English and another World Language preferred.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Candidates must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching certificate with endorsement in Elementary, Middle School Education, English 6-12 covering the grade 6 and language arts.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:
Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classroom; gym, cafeteria; auditorium; and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular Instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members, and parents is required. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary.
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated by the School Principal on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities and the standards of the Teacher Performance Evaluation.
