ESL certification. Knowledge of: second language acquisition and acculturation processes, research, legal requirements, program models, methodological approaches, techniques for teaching English, reading, and content to second language learners, appropriate assessments for program placement and monitoring student achievement, and administrative procedures in implementing a formal ESOL program that is in compliance with all laws regarding requirements for limited English proficient (LEP) students and parents.
Native or near-native proficiency in all the skills of understanding, speaking, reading and writing in English is required. Bilingualism of the language most represented by the students is an asset, not a requirement, unless the program model is a bilingual one, in which case, native or near-native proficiency in all skills of the target language of the program is required. Excellent interpersonal skills in order to: collaborate with all staff in a school and provide on-going professional development and leadership as a specialist of the second language issues in a school.

Accelerate the learning or acquisition of English for English language learners (ELLs) and the academic content of math, language arts, science, and social studies in order for LEP students to achieve passing classroom expectations, passing SOL scores and meet graduation requirements. Provide cross-cultural information about the American school system and being a student in an American school for LEP students. Serve as a liaison between the LEP student and all his/her classroom teachers and their families and the school. Implement all ESOL program procedures in order to be in compliance with legal responsibilities. Provide leadership and consultation as the second language expert/specialist to all staff in a school.
