Fugees Family, Inc. is a non-profit organization and operator of Fugees Academy, a network of independent, community-based middle and high schools that emphasize academic and character development of refugee children. Our student body represents 22 different countries, including Burundi, Iraq, Central African Republic, and Burma. The Fugees Academy blends creative teaching with academic fundamentals, interwoven with leadership and character building. The Fugees Academy middle school program meets students where they are, focusing on the foundational skills that are often lacking in children whose schooling has been nonexistent or interrupted. Once they demonstrate 8th grade level mastery, students move on to the Fugees Academy high school, where they have ample opportunity to continue their development as critical thinkers, community members, and future citizens.

The Fugees Academy serves a pressing need that is not currently being met by the traditional public education system – the education of refugee children in an environment where their unique academic challenges are understood. Through small classes, high expectations, and targeted instruction, Fugees Academy empowers the most vulnerable of students–child survivors of war—to become independent thinkers and high-achieving scholars. Working as a team both on and off the field, members of the Fugees Academy community strive to support each other while working to achieve individual goals. We believe that this team mind-set nurtures and prepares young adults who will be the next generation of international and community leaders. The core design principles of the school include an extended school day, a low teacher- student-ratio, interactive instruction, a comprehensive tutoring program, a soccer-focused athletic program, and intensive wrap-around support services for students and their families.

• Combines soccer with rigorous academics and wraparound services to help meet the needs of refugee children and their families.
• Serving boys and girls in grades 6-12, Fugees Academy will strive for 100% high school graduation and post-secondary placement (college or apprenticeship).
• Fugees Academy – Cleveland, Ohio will serve 6th grade students in the 2020-2021 school year. We will add one additional grade each year until grades 6-12 are at capacity.

Our teachers bring a diversity of backgrounds and life experiences into the classroom. For the 2020-2021 school year, we are hiring teachers for the following subjects:

• Full-time Math Teacher
• Part-time Art Teacher
• Part-time Music Teacher

Required Education, Qualifications and Experience:

• Minimum 2 years of full-time classroom teaching experience, preferably in an urban setting
• MAT or Master’s in Education or subject field / and or teaching certification
• Outstanding instructional skills, including the ability to motivate and challenge students
• Successful experience with reading instruction
• Excellent command of English, passion for supporting expressive language in non-native speakers
• Demonstrated ability to create and maintain a warm, strict, orderly classroom environment
• Demonstrated expertise in subject area and demonstrated student achievement results
• A strong sense of personal accountability for student achievement
• A belief that all students are capable of academic achievement
• A belief that building deep, authentic relationships with students and families is a priority
• Citizenship, residency or work VISA in the United States required.

Location: Cleveland, Ohio

Benefits and Salary: Salaries for these positions are competitive and depend on prior experience. In addition, a comprehensive health and dental package is included.

Schedule: Monday-Friday from 7:30 am-4:00 pm
