Second Grade Assistant Teacher – Shady Side Academy – Pittsburgh, PA

Shady Side Academy is a nationally respected private school in Pittsburgh for boys and girls in grades pre-kindergarten through 12, with an optional five-day or seven-day boarding experience in high school. The Junior School enrolls 270 students in grades PreK- 5th and is located in the Point Breeze section of Pittsburgh.

Shady Side Academy’s Junior School is seeking a full-time assistant 2nd grade teacher.

Responsibilities will include:

• Teaching all subjects to 2 groups of children across 2 classrooms in a co-teaching environment
• Working as a part of a four person 2nd grade team; extra duties include recess, lunch and bus duties
• Assist in the progress report process
• Attending all faculty meetings and in-service days
• Completing other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Head of the Junior School
• Being an integral part of a caring community of learners

A successful candidate will have:

• A depth of knowledge and understanding of young children
• A passion for working with young children
• A basic knowledge of the following approaches: Reading and Writing Workshop, Responsive Classroom, and Math in Focus
• Sensitivity to diverse communities of learners and an appreciation of developmental differences in an early childhood setting
• A knowledge of 21st Century Skills and how they relate to classroom teaching

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in early childhood or elementary education is required, a master’s degree is preferred. Ideal candidates will have at least two years of experience in an elementary school setting, an understanding of differentiated instruction, a flexible and team-oriented approach, excellent written and oral communication skills, exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, superior interpersonal skills, and a sense of humor.
