Pinkerton Academy, located in Derry, New Hampshire, sits on a beautiful 120 acres campus with 23 buildings. It is the largest independent academy in the United States offering more than 320 unique courses to approximately 3200 students. The Academy serves as the high school (grades 9-12) for the communities of Derry, Hampstead, Chester, Auburn, Hooksett and Candia.

Pinkerton Academy Philosophy: Pinkerton Academy expects all faculty members to exhibit the highest degree of professionalism in all situations, whether they are actively teaching, performing professional duties, or representing the Academy in some other capacity. Faculty members must maintain their certification, meet their commitments as outlined by the Professional Staff Handbook and individual contracts, and uphold all school policies. When, however, they find themselves in disagreement with any school policy, they will voice that disagreement within the processes spelled out in appropriate Pinkerton publications. Pinkerton Academy faculty will consistently show respect for others, their opinions, and their assignments. CLASSROOM The most important responsibility of Pinkerton teachers is carried out in the classroom. The primary roles of teachers in the classroom are to teach, facilitate learning, and mentor students so that they become independent, critical thinkers. Teachers are encouraged to use a variety of techniques to convey knowledge to and/or develop skills in their students using Pinkerton Vision for Instruction to guide practice. By their example, teachers should foster responsible, courteous, and respectful behavior in their students. Teachers will provide a positive, challenging, and supportive environment; effective instruction; and appropriate assessment and evaluation.
Teachers are expected to: Establish clear and accurate grading procedures which are made known to the students and administration at the beginning of the course. Monitor the progress of the students and issue reports when appropriate. Keep an accurate attendance record for all students. Utilize the appropriate and available resources of the Academy (library, computers, AV, etc.). Be available to students outside of classroom time. Communicate with struggling students multiple times throughout the class and, when students are unreceptive to the assistance, contact parents.
DEPARTMENT Departments are teams within the system of the school, therefore, school and department duties often overlap. The growth of a department is directly related to the “teaming” efforts of its individual members. Department heads or coordinators will evaluate their staff in the following areas: The duties include: curriculum planning punctuality professionalism care of equipment and facilities inventory and budgets general supervision reliability lessons management grading practices communication assessments professional conduct and behavior professional growth departmental responsibilities
The teaming efforts include: Exhibiting enthusiasm, cooperation, and professionalism with respect to department responsibilities. Involvement and participation in department meetings, goals and curriculum development. Displaying professional growth and judgment related to individual and departmental initiatives. Utilizing a variety of innovative techniques to achieve department and school goals. Exhibiting a willingness to work with others and share expertise and materials.
TOTAL SCHOOL Teachers have a responsibility to create a positive atmosphere in the school community beyond the classroom. Positive attitudes toward their jobs reinforce learning as a lifetime activity. Furthermore, teachers model the Academy’s goals of courtesy, respect, and responsibility through their treatment of students, staff, and parents. Diligent supervision assures students a safe environment to foster learning. Additionally, chaperoning and sponsoring activities promote student involvement. In short, Pinkerton expects teachers to contribute to the total school program.
Teachers are also expected to: Show respect to parents, patrons, community, and students. Enforce school policies and rules. Honor commitments to duties beyond teaching (i.e. any assigned duty period, general campus supervision, chaperoning, etc.). Participate in co-curricular or extra-curricular activities. Be involved with committee work periodically. Attend other school functions (i.e. parents’ night, course orientation night, faculty appreciation dinner, etc.).
