Teacher – K-3 Support Specialist – Bethel School District – Spanaway, WA

GENERAL SUMMARY
This position will create collaborative working relations with classroom teachers, parents, and building/district administrators to provide enhanced learning opportunities for students in grades K-3. This position plans, organizes, and provides instruction for students, including providing each student with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to lead self-sufficient, well-adjusted, productive, socially responsible lives to the best of their individual potential.

• Possess knowledge of research based instructional materials, strategies, and behavior interventions.
• Possess knowledge of assessment for the academic, functional, behavioral, vocational functioning of students.
• Reports incidents of child abuse, altercations, and substance abuse for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students and providing a positive learning environment, and adheres to the educational code of ethics and district/school policies.
• Develops lesson plans and manages the learning experiences, curricular and extra-curricular, to ensure the needs of the group and individual students are met.
• Provides daily large and small group instructions to students with a wide range of abilities.
• Demonstrates knowledge and fluency with Bethel School District K-3 reading and math curricula.
• Delivers high quality instruction in lessons on a daily basis.
• Delivers the district adopted curriculum.
• Demonstrates the instructional skill vital to help struggling students.
• Demonstrates flexibility to adjust plans to serve struggling students.
• Takes a leadership role in reading and math interventions.
• Works closely with teachers in the K-3 grade levels, as well as building and district administrators.
• Reports student progress multiple times per year.
• Encourages parent involvement and communicates with parents regularly.
• Provides and monitors interventions recommended by the school’s intervention team.
• Sets high expectations for all students and scaffolds for students to reach these expectations.
• Participates in the planning and evaluation of school program(s) and the district’s curriculum and program development.
• Provides maximum learning opportunities for each student and intensive academic feedback to students.
• Conducts parent conferences and a variety of other meetings with district staff, parents, and students.
• Maintains the necessary current records and reports and utilizes data to modify and improve program effectiveness.
• Provides classroom coverage as assigned by the principal.
• Participates in group activities, PLCs, and collaborates with colleagues.
• Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Establishes and maintains collaborative working relationships with staff, administrators, parents, support groups, governmental, and community service agencies.
• Assists staff in supervising paraeducators, volunteers, and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program.
• Maintains appropriate confidential reports, records, and files in compliance with state/federal law.
• Demonstrates experience and sensitivity that affirm individuality and diversity.
• Attends and participates in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the district and/or building administrator in order to accomplish the objectives of the position including on-going professional staff development.

CONDITIONS
Required to deal with a wide range of student achievement and behavior. May experience frequent interruptions and must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. May be required to deal with distraught students/parents/staff; may be exposed to infectious diseases.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and operate a computer, as well as hand-held learning devices and other office equipment. This position is active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, and reaching throughout the day. The employee will frequently use repetitive arm/hand motions and must occasionally lift and/or move items over 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee may climb stairs or ride in elevators, depending on the worksite.

Environmental Factors
Moderate to loud noise levels.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree with appropriate certificate and subject area endorsement.
• Minimum five years classroom experience with exceptional evaluations.
• Recent experience teaching reading and math at the K-3 level.

• Knowledge of current state/district assessments, state standards, and graduation requirements for students.
